Plan B backup holds: what to do when someone is ahead of you
You find the perfect weekend for your client, and the date is already on hold for someone else. Do you give up, or keep the client waiting? A backup hold, often called a Plan B, is the middle road.
What a Plan B is
A Plan B is a backup reservation placed behind an existing hold. It does not block the first person. It simply puts you next in line. If the first hold is cancelled or runs out, the date goes to the next person in line automatically.
Why it is better than waiting and asking
- ✓You do not have to keep checking the calendar.
- ✓You are told as soon as the date becomes yours.
- ✓The owner never faces two confirmed bookings, because only one booking can be confirmed on a date.
- ✓Your client gets a clear answer instead of a vague maybe.
What it does not do
A backup cannot be placed on a date that is already booked and paid. It only applies to dates that are on hold. And a backup is not a promise: the first person in line is still ahead of you until their hold ends.
Tips for agencies
- ✓Tell your client plainly that this is a backup, and when you expect to know.
- ✓Offer a second date as an alternative while you wait.
- ✓Act quickly once you are told the date is free, because your own hold has a deadline too.
